Detailed Description
The Shedler QS-20 is a 20-question mental health test designed
for use in medical settings. It screens for anxiety and depression,
and also identifies patients who may be suicide risks. The test
is self-administered by patients in a minute or two. Physicians
receive a chart-ready, computer-generated test report, printed
immediately, on-site. QS-20 is an acronym for “Quick Screen-20.”
Patients self-administer the Shedler QS-20 using hand-held computer
tablets. Diagnostic questions are displayed on a video screen
and patients answer by pressing True and False response buttons.
The test is well accepted by medical patients.
Physicians receive a chart-ready diagnostic report that includes
depression and anxiety scores, plus a global severity index indicating
overall level of mental distress. Standard scores (T-scores) and
percentiles are displayed in bar graph format, so the physician
can see instantly where the patient stands in the population.
Scores above the 84th percentile are flagged. The report also
provides a list of the symptoms reported by the patient to guide
further inquiry and treatment decisions.
The Shedler QS-20 is reliable and valid. The depression and anxiety
scales correlate highly (.91 and .90, respectively) with the full
QPD Panel Depression and Anxiety severity indexes, which are among
the most valid diagnostic tools available today.
